Barkby United v Loughborough Greenfields Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 10 May 2008 at
Loughborough Greenfields Cricket Club Lost
Greenfields won the toss and immediately chose to bat in sweltering conditions. Openers King (32) and Stockdale (42) found runs hard to come by but contented themselves with sticking around and building a platform. The pair compiled a partnership of 70 in 18 overs when King fell to a smart catch at mid wicket. As Moore (31) strode purposefully to the crease Greenfields needed to up the run rate and look to compile a large total, just as the runs began to flow; Stockdale managed to skew the ball off the back of his bat straight down the throat of a fielder. Loveridge (12) followed shortly after in similar fashion and the skids were under the Greenfields innings the score on 122-3 from 28 overs. With Barkby introducing spin from one end and donkey drops from the other, run scoring for new batsmen was becoming increasingly difficult. Just as the batsmen were looking to branch out they were having to take extravagant risks to try to push the total beyond 200. Rehal (16), Green (17) and Clarke (15) tried hard to score quick runs but the lack of pace on the ball made boundaries a rare occurance. The innings closed on 187-8 which after a good first half was a below par total.
Knowing that they would need to bowl well to get a result, openers Wild (6-0-30-0) and King (14-4-56-3) got off to a positive start the hosts 20-1 after 8 overs with King bowling Flowers. This brought Botting to the crease who joined the impressive and hard hitting Kirk, the pair compiling a partnership of 124. Brown (6-0-18-0) bowled a very tidy spell to halt the run rate and give Greenfields a chance allowing King to return along with Rehal (6.1-0-22-1). King immediately removed Kirk, Botting following shortly later. Rehal then claimed his first wicket, following it up with a run out the very next ball. With Barkby teetering on 155-5 and Greenfields on a roll, captain Hendry came to the crease and finished off any hope Greenfields had of snatching victory hitting the winning runs from the first ball of the 41st over.
