Loughborough Greenfields Cricket Club 1st XI v Dunton Bassett on Sat 17 May 2008 at
Loughborough Greenfields Cricket Club Won

After winning another toss, Clarke inserted on a greasy track under grey skies. The decision looked to have backfired as the openers set about despatching any wide delivery to the ropes, King (9-0-52-2) in particular finding things difficult. At the other end, Widdowson (7-2-12-1) made bowling look easy and continually embarrassed the batsmen who played, but were just not good enough to lay bat on ball. Widdowson removed M.Dann for a quickfire 22, followed shortly later by A.Dann bowled by King’s surprise straight one. However, Bateman (34) was proving to be a thorn in Greenfields side and patiently went about his business before the arrival of Rehal (13-1-57-2) into the attack put paid to his patient knock. T.Dann (37) played some agricultural shots but managed to clear the ropes on several occasions before Stockdale (14-4-56-5) removed him from the crease with a cracking delivery, bowling him top of middle stump. Rehal and Stockdale continued to tie down the Dunton innings, only Pickering (18) showed any sign of getting away but he played one shot too many and became another statistic in ‘keeper Iain Green’s little book. With the brakes now very much on, Dunton’s total was going to be below 200 when at the midpoint of the innings it looked likely to be well in excess of that. Stockdale continued to bowl in good areas and was rewarded with 5 wickets. The final Dunton batsmen caught expertly by Steve Moult on the point boundary with the score on 181.
With moisture in the air and a dampness in the wicket, the Dunton total was always going to be competitive. Stockdale (7) and King (7) had both been removed by the 9th over but with the score on 37, it wasn’t a bad start. Rehal (75*) batted patiently but with Loveridge (5) and Widdowson (14) both falling at the other end to the pace of Voss, Greenfields were just starting to get nervous at 74-4. However, as Horner (41) strode purposefully to the crease, the experienced batsmen looked in determined mood and despatched any poor delivery with relish. Rehal at the other end was in his stride and hammered shots to both sides of the wicket, the pair putting on 101 in a crucial and match winning partnership. Unfortunately the duo were not able to see it through, Horner – now struggling with a hamstring strain - losing his bails, 7 short of victory. Moore arriving at the crease to complete what was now a formality, the winning runs coming from yet more extras.
